Dramatic Noise Reduction in Automobiles

OHC Timing Belt

As a supplier of timing belts to many automobile manufactures we learned from feedback and past experience that a 1/100mm alteration of the size of an engine belt tooth would change the volume of abnormal noise and the size of the area from which the noise is generated, from idle to high-speed operation. Based on this understanding, Mitsuboshi Belting succeeded in determining the optimum size for the timing belt tooth and designed a tooth which better matches the belt layout and belt pulley tooth configuration. The company further reduced the level of abnormal noise by applying special treatment to the tooth fabric, thereby decreasing the surface coefficient of friction. Samples of this new timing belt from Mitsuboshi Belting were presented to numerous car manufacturers and readily passed the many noise tests required to secure engineering approval. The OHC Timing Belt is now commercially available and is being supplied to offshore car and engine manufacturers. We are already addressing new challenges which include reducing the belt width and prolonging the life of the belt plus developing belts which meet the specific requirements of a variety of engines manufactured worldwide.
